I have been assured by many progressive types that New York doesn't need the rest of the country and would prefer to be without them.
I think a little of that would go down well to put things in perspective when they consider their votes should be weighted twice as high as other citizens votes for all their big city clout and know-it-all.
Without New York, who will gamble invest your retirement money into financial derivatives? Think of all the value they bring shuffling paper around (usually into their own pockets).
The thought is, generally speaking, true. The amount of money needed will go up and up, but there are enough mercenary Americans who will, eventually, for enough money, help New Yorkers.
For 5k, some druggie with a motorbike over in New Jersey will Uber Eats your meal to you in NY.
So they aren't wrong on the surface level, but the question is how long can the supporting structure, the poor and downtrod supporting class of NY, stand it?

Yeah... but once it starts to break down people would intercept that uber guy before he got to your house. Maybe he would shoot them, like the delivery driver in Snow Crash. Maybe they'd shoo thim.
I guess Gazan elites have food. That's all I can think of right now to compare.
Kevin O'Leary has been refusing to invest in NY since the Trump real estate suit trial. This is just yet another reason to not do business in NY/NYC. Dilbert alone isn't going to do much but I don't think he's alone.
A blue-collar action would certainly hit them harder but bleeding out businesses will still hurt in the long run.
Yeah this isn't the first or last nail in that coffin. They will make it suck more and more until more people refuse. And then these states tend to go through a 'business friendly' period where more fortunes are made.
It was the same thing with California population. Amidst Great Replacement it never shrank. Until it did. It sucked more and more until even immigrants said it's greener elsewhere.
while no one cares about Scott Adams, something like a trucking or shipping embargo could really fuck them up.

It is weird how they believe that. I've had that argument out too. They think as long as they have money they will have food brought to them.

Pratchett died too early.
Imagine the endless carts of goods not coming and going from Ankh-Morpork any more.
Sam Vimes would have the very best on that case working their magic!
But I think he'd also like to question Rincewind and Twoflower over their apparent appearance on a certain Flight 11 which was unaccounted for.
It doesn't matter really because while the state can look after itself without the city, the state cannot look after itself and the city together.
However those saying it generally are in the city and have likely never left it unless by air.
