You can easily make a case for Americans being on a isolated tech tree rather than being dumb. They made megastructures, buildings shaped to cause the wind to mimic animal noises, designs only visible from space, and so on.
Not Notre Dame amazing, but even so some impressive stuff.
They had the "debuff" of having a very generous environment: Mild winters, lots of food all year round, for a long time no need to farm because you could just hunt or gather enough for everyone, whether you were migratory or not. That strongly shapes your tech tree. The fact they still built megastructures when they had no need for structures at all in the first place tells wonders of at least some of their ambition.
and then they had what, Llamas? At least as far as I read on the theory, they also didn't have much by way of stuff that is domesticatable, not many candidates. Extra little debuff.
