I've been told similar in person by actual middle school kids about others at their school--kids who wear tails to school, call themselves furries, etc. I took a bit of it with a grain of salt, but never really dismissed it. With what we know for certain about things happening in schools, it's not as much of a stretch as it seems.
Not necessarily, we always had the “wolf girl” type. But instead of one or two kids that can be targeted as the problem, it’s half the class and if you say anything you’re bigot and deserve to die.
My wife wrote up several students for this and she actually got reprimanded because she was “targeting kids” and “trying to suppress their self expression”. Not to mention the parents threw a fit and one even sent death threats. I can’t wait until we move out of this liberal shithole soon
At last, I can share this. I only had a horse girl (exceedingly normal by today's standards) and a kid with a roller suitcase instead of a backpack. I can't believe how normal my experience was, everything blew up after I left.
A while ago it was "otherkin" which was spread on tumblr, but this time it's "therian" being spread on tiktok. Basically the same mental illness but a new coat of paint.

My wife teaches 9th grade English and her HONORS class has a problem with barking and meowing in the middle of class. Absolutely insane
Kids used to do this when I was in school just to disrupt class. If you did it too much you would be called an annoying faggot.
"Your annoying barking is so gay!" Everything was gay back then in words. Now everything is gay but you can't say it.
