I'm sure everyone here has at least one series that the post title brings to mind, but the 2021 Rugrats reboot is what inspired this post. They haven't gone woke as far as I'm aware but they've completely shit all over the original series.
They're using CGI animation as opposed to the 2D animation the original and All Grown Up used, and it's fucking obnoxious. CGI is completely overrated as an animation style and Jimmy Neutron is the only series I can think of where it made a positive contribution. It's one thing to use it in a brand new franchise but why is it so much to ask to stick to the original style in a reboot?
Then there's the fact that they wiped their asses with the original storyline. They retconned how Kira and Chas met, replacing the Rugrats in Paris storyline with some retarded plot about them meeting over free piano lessons that Kimmy won. Dil doesn't even appear in the series, despite his birth taking place before Kimmy and Kira were introduced in the original. These aren't minor inconsistencies that autists obsess about. They're the two biggest events in the entire series that introduced new characters and storylines and did it very well. Like I said I'm not aware of the series going woke, so I don't understand the motivation for shitting all over the original.
At some point I realized it's not my world anymore, and they aren't making movies/TV shows/games to appeal to people like me anymore. And if I'm going to spend the time watching/playing something I'd rather it be from a time when these things were made to appeal to me.
So I don't even pay attention to what's being made these days. I just buy old DVDs and Blurays from goodwill that look interesting, and play old abandonware games.

Reboots? Remakes? Even remasters? Fuck all of them, fuck you if you ask for them and fuck the company that makes them. New IPs and innovate, stop fucking with the past and leave it alone, FOREVER.
I miss ports. Just update your input, network, storage, graphics, and sound code to the new target platform.
I miss when Microsoft made Herculean efforts to keep newer versions of Windows backwards-compatible with older versions, going so far as to inject Windows bugs into certain programs when they were necessary for the program to work right.

Well fuck, I stand corrected then. As I said I didn't look too deeply into because I was turned off by the shit I mentioned in my post. Betty and Howard always had an "alpha woman/beta man" dynamic but Betty being a lesbian was always just a fan theory until this shitty reboot.
I dont like 2d toons that use cgi. Its too clean looking.
I'm waching the live-action AtLAB remake and my conclusion is, they just don't care.
Not just about the original story and characters, but their own plot, dialog, continuity, effects, you name it. Once that IP is slapped on and, if you're lucky, until the end of the first episode, they're done. Just throw all the set peices and lines that you want to rip off into a blender and let it run until it's grey goo. Don't spend any time or money on writing, acting, directing, or paying attention to details (like set lights reflecting in props, or obvious green screen lines) and push it out.
I don't think remakes are ever good, but they could make good stuff out of unexplored story lines or side characters using live action or different animation. The probalem is: everything they make is crap, regardless of IP.
