What a way to start the New Year, hopefully this isn't a repeat of 2011 but looks like they had 30 earthquakes in quick succession, a tsunami has already hit the northern areas but seems lessons have been learned and people got out quick. And props to the engineers as this is the footage in my feed right now, they really know how to build to resist earthquakes.
Update: as of now around 60 quakes have been recorded, the largest being 7.6 magnitude.
Update 2: had this video from Hero Hei showcasing more footage including a scary one of the effect on rivers. One thing that is disturbing is people are posting fake or non existent addresses hampering rescue attempts. It's unknown if this is malicious, panic of the event or people getting mixed up as there are apparently people just reposting clips of old events like 2011 but should be taken note of.
Not many people are more prepared to withstand earthquakes and tsunamis than Japan. Good luck gentlemen.
When the rest of the world borrows your language's name for a phenomenon, you probably can be considered the most veteran people out there for dealing with them.
I wonder if anyone else in the world uses American English to refer to "Tornados" and "Twisters". I feel like the US probably has the largest amount of tornadoes on Earth.
The swedes to some extent and mainly the younger generation, but is more due to the American culture influence in general. (regarding Tornados).
Yeah, I was about to say the same.
Fun fact:
Japan's alert app for earthquakes and tsunamis is called NERV.
It's a deliberate reference--their logo even has the famous slogan "God's in His Heaven. All's right with the world."
They are the holy country of weebs, may as well have national institutions named as such!
I only learned about that app today, because their Twitter started posting so much today, they got rate-limited by the API.
It was all sorted out a couple of hours later, once the account got tagged as a public utility, and now it can tweet as much as it wants.
I didn't think this factoid warranted its own post here, so I didn't make one. But once I saw this topic, I had an opportunity to share this.
This is extremely cool, and I am very glad you shared it. I wish I saw more things like this instead of all the mega gay stuff.
Metal. I've never seen quakes before. It's amazing to see the ground shifting like that. I saw another video on the Donald that better showed the movement.
i saw a video with some aftermath, parking lot completely torn asunder. must have been some quake.
what a way to start in the year I guess...
