The Eva movies are god awful and designed for people who didn't "get" Eva. Including the creator himself, who openly despises his audience and wrote all the movies as a giant middle finger to the people who made him famous enough to get to make movies.
The original series is pretty basic compared to what's come out by now, but for the time it came out in America it was pretty groundbreaking and special. Especially if you were at the right age and mindset to just "feel" it.
Of which the majority of weeb culture of yesteryear was.
I was watching Eva on Adult Swim as a young lad, same with FLCL, so all the themes of it really hit me right where it hurt and made me appreciate Shinji all the more for it.
The movies were absolutely terrible, unless you hated Eva to begin with. The best example of that is the fight against Zeruel. The original was played out with absolute horror, that became more and more pronounced as it went on. While the Rebuild version is awesome with badass declarations and kickass moves, where the only horror is them saying "oh but this halo that formed could totally end the world totally."
Another good example is his complete sidelining of Asuka for Mari, which was clearly and completely done just out of his personal hate of people fanboying over her.

I was in eighth grade when I first saw Sailor Moon, which got me into anime as a whole.
And this was before it made Toonami--this was on the USA Network's Action Extreme Team block.
When I saw Neon Genesis Evangelion for the first time, I was 40.
Even though production completely fell apart by the finale, I still adored it and End Of.
But you seriously hated the movies?
