The entire phone system is pure barbarism. Arguably the worst invention of the 20th century. The idea that someone in a remote location can disturb the peace of your home at any time and you're actually obligated to react immediately is completely insane. I've had my phone on silent for more than a decade now and never regretted it a day. The number of uninterrupted sleeps I've had as a result has probably added years onto my life.

Alexander Graham Bell was a meddling son-of-a-bitch who should have been shot by some public spirited citizen before he perfected the telephone.
Same goes for his other competitors.
