I grew a beard entirely so I don't look as European. I kept having people assume I just got off the boat.

Even without the beard I got searched at every airport and got a letter telling me my bag was 'randomly selected' to be searched... In my bag.
I once wore a trenchcoat I'd been gifted to the airport. What do you know, I got randomly selected for everything. Whoops.
I just take carry ons and wear loose clothing when I go.
