UK Police arrest British journalist for posting ‘malinformation’ about Ukraine, Justin Trudeau under Online Safety Act
The government can order the arrest or detention of anyone said to be “hateful” or judged by fact checkers to be posting “misinformation.”
Sounds like he’s probably worth listening to.
Nobody ever gets arrested for lying. Only for telling uncomfortable truths.
edit:
So it seems journalist Warren Thornton was arrested by British police for broadcasting correct information about Canada welcoming a Waffen SS veteran?
That's why it matters that we defend Assange. If they get him, they will arrest others who publish inconvenient truths.
Quit making Russia seem the 'bastion of press freedom' compared to the west
Them and China are just not as clumsy about silencing people, I hope this is more a last gasp of a dying power as the UK authorities seem to be grasping at straws knowing their time is coming to an end. This doesn't seem like the actions of someone in control.
Make no mistake, China absolutely will clamp down on any dissent. They will bother with even the pettiest of grievances. However, China does it quietly. The journalist will disappear and nobody is allowed to notice that the journalist disappeared. In mainland China, the biggest source of anger is when the government messes with their children. The main difference is that the CCP has an obsession with saving face in anything they do. They will hide or suppress anything that might make them look bad, even when they know they can get away with it. For the West, they aren't as obsessive about what to hide, mainly because they are so arrogant that they (rightfully) believe that they will get away with their blatant abuse of power and play it up as a virtuous action for the greater good.
Lucky, or unlucky, for you Cressida Dick isn't in charge of the MET police anymore.
It's more comparison:
West clamps down on speech: noticed easily and the attempt to say nothings happening shows how clumsy and rushed it was doen
China or Russia doesn't like what you said: "what happened to Lee/Vladimir? He hasn't turned up for a week?"
If you look at history of the Soviet secret police, you know the most terrifying thing that kept people in check was that people simply disappeared with no trace. The Western authorities don't have the capacity to do that, hell it's still a meme that Epstein didn't kill himself!
Malinformation not misinformation. So in otherwords information that wasn't convenient
"it's not wrong, but he shouldn't say it"
aka the refrain of the trump years
Nothing would surprise me from the UK or the West in general. But this sounds a bit sketchy, at least the part where it relates to the repressive Online Safety Act - which, as far as I know (and I may be wrong), is passed but has not yet gone into effect, and which is not a criminal law aimed at individual users.
I do love how based Human Events is when it comes to the war.
You're right, the law hasn't been given Royal Assent yet so it's not enforceable yet. This would be an illegal arrest and Thornton needs to instruct his lawyer to take action against the police force.
But it will be used this way once it does become law.
One problem - the Online Safety Act hasn't been given Royal Assent yet so if they've been arrested under that, it's an illegal arrest and Thornton should have his lawyer take action against the police force who arrested him.
But yes, once it becomes law, this will become a regular occurrence in the UK for anyone who dissents or criticises the Government.
