SSRI's helped me years ago when I was going through depression. They lift the load by mitigating the symptoms, making it easier to work towards fixing the causes. They are not stupid.
You can rephrase this with any other drug or consumption and it sounds moronic

An unfair comparison. SSRI's aren't addictive or even particularly pleasurable.
