Apparently that study was done right around puberty, which girls tend to hit sooner than boys. In other words the girls were essentially given a head start compared to any other point in their lives when this study was conducted. I think there's some truth to the claim that the standard deviation is lower for women, but claims about the means being equal are certainly suspect.

The reality is that chicks are great at doing what they're told, so they make fantastic classical musicians.
They suck at creativity, which is why there are (almost) no chick rock guitarists.
