I keep betting notifications and emails from them about the show. I know it is something else I need to let go, but it still annoys me how someone can butcher source material like that. I guess since I bought all the books from Amazon they assumed I'd be interested in the show, and if this was early 2000s or prior then yes I would be interested in an adaptation of a book series I enjoyed. If there was ever a nerd court I would put that showrunner on trial. He actually said we want to bring out lgbt content where it is only hinted at as well as the fact that he is a feminist. I would've countered with if the author didn't have much gay stuff in the books maybe it wasn't a priority for him.
I remember I used to get on the WOT subreddit when I was reading the books and had good discussions, then the cast photos came out and I was hoping people would call it out for the obvious "modern day casting", but they didn't and the ones who did say they looked nothing like the book described got the usual attacks.
My parents started watching it and they stopped. My dad will say a show "went gay on him" and stops watching. I used to think he was going overboard but I have pretty much reached that point with anything after 2014 especially with black/female/lgbt stuff since they just keep going on and on about it. I need a trusted recommendation or the one person I'll give a pass to is Denzel since he is one of my all time favorite actors.
Anyway, I really hope Wheel of Time gets cancelled. I would also love to see people refuse to sell the rights of a book/book series to these mega corporations. I fear that what they did to WOT is only child's play compared to what Netflix will do to the Narnia series. Thank goodness they lost the rights to Conan.
They literally can’t make shows about men anymore. Every male character needs to be torn down and surrounded by girl bosses. It’s every single adaptation at this point.
It is female ego. Lots of witches in modern women who seethe at healthy male anything. I have seen this many times in college and the work force as well as our and about. And contrary to popular opinion, it is not just the ugly and old women. Many a pretty young gal has the same anger.
Exactly. I figured that’s how they would do Conan. Surround him with much more capable women. I watch a lot of old tv shows and one of my all time favorites is Leave it to Beaver. A male character like Ward Cleaver would never make it today
Have you seen the coverage of Ahsoka? Main character? Female. Her apprentice? Female. Their good buddy, the republic general? Female. Main bad guy? White dude. His probably soon to be redeemed apprentice? Female. It’s comical at this point.
If they hired Sebastian Stan to play Luke in a series that focused entirely on Luke, without flooding the show with unnecessary girl bosses who undermine him at every turn, they would be printing money right now. It’s what everyone wants and it would be easy to do. They aren’t doing it because money isn’t the goal. They are operating under ideological possession.
I’m a huge pre-Disney Star Wars fan and loved the EU. For all their talk of strong females they already had Mara Jade or Jaina they could’ve used. Plus I enjoyed reading about Luke reforming the Jedi Order. They just had to make him a failure.
The people that corrupt these things never actually have real interest in or knowledge of them, they just see it as another vector for their illness.
At this point the best scenario is for Disney stock to crash hard enough that George Lucas can buy back the franchise for tree-fiddy and an expired Burger King coupon.
Hollywood only makes one movie or TV show. It’s about a strong, powerful, perfect woman who does everything better than all the men. They just take this one story and have it wear all the actually popular entertainment properties like a skinsuit in order to sell it to the masses.
Leftists, wearing legitimacy like a skinsuit since 1848.
Even the "woke-free" Mario movie was nothing but this formula. Besides the obvious scenes of girlboss-Peach dominating and saving the day (or "out-Marioing" Mario in Mario things), just about every shot of Mario/Peach/Toad walking had Peach in the middle, cowardly Mario/Toad hesitating while brave Peach walked forward bravely.
Reacher Season 1 was fine.
And terminal list. Did they mess up Reacher season 2?
Just read the books. Why even watch tv. Waste fo time.
I did. Just sad how butchering source material is the thing to do. I do a lot of reading and now if I see a movie trailer that looks interesting but is based on a novel I go and buy the novel.
The early books are the strongest, unfortunately. My memory is hazy, but I recall RJ really starts padding the pages around books 8-10. Famously, one of these books can be skipped entirely without meaningfully affecting the overarching plot. This putzing about was of course made 10x worse when Jordan fucking died before he could finish the series. Sanderson did a competent job rounding it out, but his style is much more shamelessly cinematic.
There's something to be said for the value in the journey rather than the ending (though I thought the ending was good). Could certain elements and characters been dropped and the core still have been the same? Sure. Did the Seanchan nation and the foxes and snakes add depth to the world? Definitely.
Jordan also had plans for a post series trilogy following Mat, so it's not like they were pointless additions.
Yea that journey they go on was epic indeed.
Really?! I didn’t know that about Mat. So him and his wife? Did Jordan make an outline or anything?
IIRC not enough to put into a book, or hardly any. He was planning on working on it after finishing the original.
That would’ve been cool to see May and his wife running the empire. Speaking of his wife, it just shows in the books they meet diverse cultures after leaving the village and traveling the world
Great to hear you are reading them! Yea, the book really lets you know how isolated Edmond’s Field is so that really is lore breaking to have it be multiracial. I tried to explain this to a show fan and they basically said so what. They do meet all sorts of people when they leave Edmond’s Field as you will see
My mom has read a ton of fantasy books over the years, and WoT is one of her favorites. My cousin (and mom's sort-of-daughter (complicated)) was diagnosed with various runs-in-the-family cancer and my mom sent her entire WoT collection to her to give her a world to escape to while dealing with the side effects of her chemo. They both love this series.
Queue the abomination that is the Amazon show and they were so happy to see it getting a TV adaptation. I don't remember overhearing any of their conversations about S1, but now that S2 is out they mentioned it again.
Just this morning mom asked to borrow my LotR movie set because her streaming subs don't have the first movie, but do have 2 & 3, for some reason. The topic turned to WoT, and she ranted to me a bit about how upset the show has been making her (and the cousin) because of what a far departure from the books it's been. She will NEVER badmouth the woke casting choices, but the story changes made her as mad as I've ever seen her with a TV show.
They are both sickeningly left wing, but it gives me some small measure of hope that they're both able to recognize what a skinsuit these IPs have become.
This attitude is endemic among leftists. You see it with leftist gamers all the time lately. They’ll see all of the diverse woke devs working on Diablo 4, and then Diablo 4 ends up sucking dick, but any attempt to connect the obvious dots is still met with accusations of bigotry.
I had Diablo 3 but I guess Diablo 4 is pretty lousy. When they hype the diversity of devs that’s definitely a red flag
I’ve been called a book purist before. I get that you can’t adapt a book exactly but you need to put the author’s vision on the screen. Changing the races because you feel there isn’t enough diversity is definitely in the “injecting your own garbage” category as well as playing up gay characters and downplaying male characters so female characters can shine even brighter.
Peter Jackson said his goal was to bring Tolkien’s vision to the screen. That’s how WOT should’ve been approached
Realistically "fandoms" need to gatekeep more. And I would love if there were some method for a fandom to rescind usage of certain terms.
e.g. the "Star Trek" made by JJ Abrams is not actual Star Trek. The actual fans who kept the series alive for 40 years should have more than zero capability to stop a vandal like Abrams from shitting over the idea/property they sustained.
It's not asking a lot for basic commitments to authentically representing the original creator's vision.
Agree. Same with Star Wars, comic books, LOTR, etc
Netflix fucked up witcher the same way Amazon fucked up LOTR the same way. Apparently they also race swapped in invincible and the boys as well Pretty much nothing is sacred anymore.
I bought the Witcher books a few months back and will read them once I get through the current stack of books I’m reading. Also have the Elric books in my “to read” pile. What’s crazy is that they had Cavill who loved the books! And that casting lady changing the race of Yennifer because a beautiful white lady bothers her. I’m like then write your own story!
At this point any books, games, TV or movie with strong female / "diverse" protagonists is auto trash. In our times judging a book by its cover is productive in saving you time and money. There is no hidden good to discover. All are woke feminist trash.
That’s why my general rule of thumb is 2014 and prior.
Whoever greenlit amazon touching wheel of time deserves a beating.
Is there a market for smaller studios to get the rights of some fantasy series and do lower budget but faithful adaptations? I understand the fans of those series would mostly like it, but even with something big like Wheel of Time how many real fans are there?
Are they still trying to say that the dragon reborn can be female? I think it was you who said that they took Rand’s big moment and gave it to the ladies.
And someone told me Moraine is in some lesbian relationship. So I guess she won’t be getting married to the guy at the end. Min is supposed to be one of Rand’s wives but I’m sure they see three women in love with one man as sexist even though you can find endless romance stories of two guys fighting over a woman
Lan and moiraine weren't a thing in the books either but I won't spoil his character arcs that come later. Give them a shot, they're actually good.
I know. I just didn’t want to spoil the ending about who she marries. I enjoyed the relation of Lan and Moraine in the books as well as Moraine mentoring Rand.
Cracks me up how when it comes to lgbt they either faithfully adapt or the slightest hint of it has to be expanded
