It's not a biological need like oxygen, water, and food are, you won't die if you don't do it, which is why I hedged my words a bit. I would agree though for the most part. There's probably a better word to describe it than 'need', but it's close enough.
It could be argued that this borders on a biological need - at least our bodies seem to think so - so of course they have chosen to vilify it.
