The primary evil in modernity is people are encouraged to engage in destructive behavior and are validated when they do so. And when it all goes off the rails and lives are destroyed, those who did the encouraging and validation wash their hands of the whole matter and blame the person whose life was destroyed for not knowing when to stop.

You'll see this dynamic pretty much wherever you care to look: casinos, drugs, "alternative lifestyles". If it destroys you all you get is an "I'm sorry you weren't strong enough: most people are".

An entire world run by that one kid we all knew growing up who would always encourage but never himself participate and therefore always managed to stay out of the trouble everyone else was getting into.
