Anime is making pursue immortality or at least a longer life, my backlog grows and I haven't even started watching all of One Piece or Gintama, at least my retirement won't be boring..
A good season overall, a lot more action compared to last season and summer is looking more intense, so far the leftists still haven't managed to get their claws inside any of the popular ones so still a safe haven for those of us wanting entertainment. I'm also going to link some of the op and eds in this as there were some really good songs this season.
On my backlog: Ranking of Kings spinoff, Heavenly Delusion, my love story with Yamada-kun at lv999, Skip and Loafer (started first episode at least) Why Raelina Ended up at the Duke's Mansion, The dangers in my heart, Otaku elf, insomniacs after school. Just didn't have enough time.
Best of season: Oshi no Ko: great op and ed that delves into the dark side of the entertainment industry. Won't spoil just try to watch the 1hr first episode, if it doesn't hook you then ok but if it does wait for ep 6 as it's something we've been monitoring A LOT.
Demon Slayer: no brainer, fantastic art and op, great VA work from Tanjiro va in that last episode, just a good time.
Mobile Suit Gundam The witch from Mercury cour 2: Warcrimes! Get your fresh warcrimes with big robots! God damn Prospera is the biggest bitch around but damn does she play EVERYONE like a fiddle, BIG payoffs from the set up of the first cour and a great 2nd op
Death mount Dead Play: This one caught me off guard and almost slept on it. Great op pulls an uno reverse card first episode and every character is a shade of grey not 1 dimensional, highly recommend.
Dr Stone season 3: I learn more science from this than my time in school, getting more payoffs and can't help but root for your guy 1 billion percent
Mashle magic and muscles: one punch man goes to Hogwarts. In a word of nerds relying on magic for everything, one gigachad goes to everyone and teaches why you never skip leg, bicep, abdominal, back etc day. Really funny had so many belly laughs from this one.
Konosuba: An explosion on this wonderful world: it's more Konosuba but telling Megumin's backstory so if you enjoyed the main series you'll enjoy this
Need more episodes to cook: Hell's Paradise: the art is good as well as the action, story is interesting but needs at least 16 episodes before I can recommend.Great op
Slept on: My Home Hero: The art might put people off but the story about a father covering up murdering his daughter's abusive Yakuza boyfriend is a good thriller, props to his wife as a keeper as she walks in and immediately goes 'alright how do we hide the body?'
Interesting but not for everyone: Kamikatsu: Working for God in a godless world: You will be trolled by the art in this, they are doing it on purpose. Son of a cult leader after a ritual wakes up in 'another world' where there is no concept of god. After nearly dying thanks to this empire's adoption of Canadian healthcare, his loli cult's god comes down to save him and together start a religion to givdme her power through worshippers. It's nuts from Sex cults, strange 2016 CGI monsters and the best girl was a guy but it's fun to watch.
The Legendary hero is Dead!: fantastic op, a village farmer and devoted follower of thighology accidentally kills the hero in the dumbest trap ever and forced by the hero's necromancer ally to inhabit the hero's body to 'save the world'. Got some good humour but is heavy on fan service so not your thing skip, but at least listen to the op.
Rokudo's Bad Girls: In a story that I can't tell is Imp's hell or secret fantasy, mc gains a charm from his grandfather that makes any bad girl fall in love with him, the biggest being a girl that solo's gangsters for breakfast, good op and fun ed
Mentioning because I can: I got a cheat skill in Another world and became Unrivaled in the Real world too: long ass title explains it all, quite generic but to it's credit brilliantly displays trauma in the MC for being bullied all his life
My One-Hit kill sister: yeah I know its heavy on the incest vibes and fan service but two things: 1. WHY is the art for the action scenes REALLY good? 2. The ed which is good visuals are giving me flashbacks of Recess/Rugrats creepy pasta stories or is that just me?
In another world with my smartphone: it improved a little, that's it so it's avoided being last on my worst Isakai list.
The average: The aristocrat's otherworldly adventure, Summoned to Another world for a second time. They're not bad but VERY predictable.
That's it, I KNOW I left a few things off but it's just a stream of anime nowadays, even professional anime YouTubers that do it as a job can't keep up!
Oshi no Ko is absolutely fresh, not at all derivative, and comes from the Kaguya/Love is War creator. I'm amazed that they actually got away with a feature film length first episode, and I can absolutely understand why they went that route. Don't let my Kaguya comment mislead you, it's not a romantic comedy, it's an entertainment drama with lighthearted moments, but also with a very dark plot concerning one of the two focus characters.
The thing is, the author is working on a new thing and if he surpasses this he should be in the honorary GOAT status
Dr. Stone season 3's Crunchyroll dub turned a female character non-binary. They/them bullshit and all.
Her name is Francois, and she is voiced by Michelle Rojas, who also claims to be non-binary.
That really fucking hurt to see, since I sang my praises about Dr. Stone before.
They did the same with the subs. I'll have to keep an eye out for fansubs to replace the copy of this season I have on my server.
I wonder what the actual Japanese dialogue said.
Thanks for the warning on The dangers of my heart, that first bit about the mc may have made a lot of people drop it where I've just yet to watch it.
Your backlog is really the only shows I followed this season. Dangers of my Heart is probably romance anime of the year.
I've heard good things about ALL my backlog so saved them all, I'm doing a Captain America and keeping a list of shit I need to catch up on lol
It's amusing that very little of we watched overlapped. For a few you didn't cover:
Kimi wa Houkago Insomnia : AOTS in my opinion. It's comfy, pure, and emotive in way that not many modern titles are. Astrophotography is already a relaxed topic (and it's covered properly too), but combined with insomnia and young romance, it really hits all the nostalgia and slice of life buttons. If you enjoy the slice of life genre even a little bit, don't miss this.
iDOLM@STER U149 : If you watch this, you probably already know what you're getting into. It's solidly done and exactly what you expect, with an episode for each girl. There are only references to other portions of the iDOLMA@STER franchise, so you can jump right in without having watched or played anything else if U149 interests you.
Watashi no Yuri wa Oshigoto desu! : A surprise standout and really entertaining if you like drama and are okay with yuri undertones. It might look like yuri GochiUsa on the surface, but it's much more drama-laden and often darker, but still with comedic segments. The contrasting elements, conflicts, and character development all work to make it a very engaging watch.
Edomae Elf : Just an okay slice of life, nothing overly special or exciting. The running gags can get old, and slice of life aspect isn't enough to make up for the lack of plot development. It's still entertaining if you like this sort of anime, but it's seasonal fluff.
Also, Megumin's KonoSuba is a bit disappointing, although at least it picks up in the second half. It doesn't really live up to the main series without the rest of the cast to balance things out, and Megumin's village in particular is somewhat stifling.
That's great, because you can fill in for the descriptions of what I didn't watch lol
Haven't seen it, seemed really weird based on description. But everyone seems to love it, so I guess I'll check it out. Hopefully I enjoy it as much as everyone else is, looking forward to checking it out now.
Dude. Just gets better and better. It starts off...not amazing but fun, remains fun for a bit, and then just starts heaping on actual depth and intrigue. It doesn't do anything drastically different, but it's also not going down the same old tropes, I don't know how everything ties together yet, and it's quite intriguing. I recommend. Also, shark girl is the best.
I'm only two or three episodes deep, but it is pretty funny from what I've seen. Very tongue in cheek, but it's not over the top about it. It's a wink wink nudge nudge parody of Harry Potter and its ilk. Quite fun so far.
This one is so stupid but so fun at the same time. The MC is described as gorgeous, he's insanely good at almost literally everything, ever girl he meets basically immediately falls in love with him, and scenarios keep randomly popping up where he is able to miraculous save the day from all sorts of implausible occurrences. It's just so over the top it's kind of fun.
Haven't seen it mentioned yet, but it's super wholesome.
I'll add that last one to the list lol
Prospera: gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss and genocide. Haven't watched much as I don't usually watch adaptations, but I've been enjoying WFM.
You always find a couple interesting ones I had never heard about. Thank you for doing these updates each season
Not a problem, I try to do these around the episode 11 mark so that people have a chance to binge if they see something they like before next season starts.
Thank you for this
Not a problem, despite the time it takes to make these posts I enjoy doing them as get to share some actually good entertainment
Highly recommend clicking on a few of the linked music as Idol from Oshi no Ko actually got a worldwide no 1 it was that good.
Hells Paradise is in the same boat as Oshi No Ko, and Chainsaw Man.
They all need more than 12 episodes worth to get really damn good, ONK suffering the least in this regard imo.
Unfortunately, Oshi No Ko is the only one to get the fabulous treatment of a feature length film for the first episode.
Chainsaw Man and Hells Paradise will suffer a bit because 12/13 episodes just isn't QUITE enough to really get people invested, imo.
As a manga reader it took me 2 tries for both of the aforementioned to get into it, and I fear that will be the case for them in the anime realm as well.
CSM and HP are both well done middle to end, but have slow, albeit good enough, starts.
Good news about Chainsaw Man, I've heard it'll get a second season and a film so it looks like it'll get the Jujitsu Kaisen treatment.
Got no clue on Hell's Paradise unfortunately.
I would like to add Vinland Saga season 2 to the mix. it was completely different from season 1, turning away from action and towards self-reflection. the story is paced very well, with excellence commentaries on war, soldiers, and everything that surrounds them. the last few episodes almost felt biblical in how the main character ends up handling things. well worth a watch.
Only reason I didn't include it is it carried on from last season and I'm WAY behind on it to comment on it. It's on my backlog list along with Ancient Magus' bride.
Only covering this season but from your description, I'd recommend Oshi no Ko, Death mount Dead Play, Mobile suit Gundam The witch from Mercury and Hell's Paradise.
Might've suggested Demon Slayer but by now you've kinda decided if you're watching it or not thanks to it's popularity lol.
My home hero was pretty good... Right up until the last two episodes, the ending felt very weak compared to the rest. No fun, no intrigue, just a bunch of melodrama and characters suddenly acting dumb as rocks, and then a lame season 2 hook instead of a proper ending.
I have to agree unfortunately, it definitely feels like they could've improved this adaptation a lot more, it wasn't bad but wasted some of it's potential.
Hell's Paradise is good from what I've seen so far. Would recommend waiting for the bluray release to see if we get nipples on the tits in the show.
Demon Slayer does continue being good despite the pacing seemed very poor (slow) with a lot of cliff hangers. Probably better to binge the entire season.
The "hogwarts" one sounds fun. Next season I am waiting for Tiny Senpai or whatever it'll get called.
