Market economics fails to curtail cultural degeneracy in the same way Democracy fails to result in anything but collective tyranny. People do what's easy, and what everyone around them is doing, and individuals are rarely "rational consumers". I do have more faith in the free market to correct problems ("sort itself out") over time, but that time could be tens or hundreds of years.
