As a non-Murican, I will never understand this late night show concept. So it's not stand up comedy, not a fully scripted TV comedy show, not actual news.
Why do people watch it? Especially when so many of these hosts are such dickheads ( and not even in the funny, grumpy way, just... whatever Ellen Degenerate is).
Back in the olden days, they were just apolitical, funny variety shows where they'd bring on celebrities -- usually to promote a new movie/book/whatever. They'd do some cheezy skits (check out "The Bar" from David Letterman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFk4nxBdAsA ) and talk about working in the industry ... and mostly just try to be funny.
I would imagine that there is at least some of that left, between all the virtue signaling and promotion of The Message, but I haven't watched anything but embarrassing clips from them for decades so I really couldn't tell you.
In years past it was better. Carson was great and I watch his reruns now because they are shown on classic tv channels here. Now it’s simply like listening to a DNC rep
Very occasionally you'll get some absolutely outstanding hosts, that can make anything fun. A bunch of people already mentioned Carson. Old school Conan actually had his moments, especially when Norm McDonald was involved. But probably the only one I really and consistently ever enjoyed was Craig Ferguson, who is a total legend. I'm very glad he got out before late night went to total shit, as he'd probably be woking it up with the rest. Or #MeToo'd and fired.
Old school Conan was hilarious. It’s a shame the woke borg claimed him.
I was actually a huge fan of Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld, which aired at 2 or 3am. That show was absolute insanity, and it’s wild fox allowed it on the network, even in the middle of the night.
Back in the days when they were good, they were vehicles for stars, not “celebrities” but genuine old-school stars that people had actually heard of, to come on TV to promote their latest project and shoot the shit with Johnny Carson who was entertaining in his own right.

It's been running for decades off of momentum built up by Johnny Carson.

If you're a cord-cutter pluto.tv has a 24/7 Carson Tonight Show channel.
Nice! I have Pluto so I’ll check it out.

Yeah Craig was good. It's helped by the fact that I only had the highlights fed to me through youtube. But yeah, Craig was actually funny
Couldn't have a gay skeleton nowadays though.
