what reason could they possibly have to protect epps?

We don't know yet why he was fired.

If it was re Epps it's because the Jan 6 narrative is a big hurdle for Trump and Fox/Murdoch will do anything to stop Trump.

But it could have been Epstein related or lots of other things.
