The narcissism. They simply can not accept that we humans are just abnormally intelligent animals. We're born, we breed, we die. They think we have somehow transcended this cycle. We have not. We live by that cycle and they want to shatter it. If they get their way....

Whatever the fuck is behind this shit is seriously trying to euthanize the human race.
If someone told me we're the target of a secret alien invasion and that they've been replacing or reprogramming influential humans for years a la V, I wouldn't be surprised. More like, "oh now it all makes sense."
You might be interested to read a short story called "Love is the Plan, The Plan is Death", about a reasonably smart fellow who also thought he was above Nature's way of things.
It's part of an anthology book called "The Future I", edited by Asimov. If I were to be asked what my favourite short story is, this would be it.
