There is no hypocrisy, there is only power. No one has any principles, only a will to power. The principles that men espouse are just ways of gaining power. If a politician told you: "we all need to get together to help me gain more power and wealth", he would be laughed at. So instead, he spouts banal platitudes instead.
They don't care. They don't see the rules as being this neutral system that applies to both sides equally. They don't even recognize the other side as being a valid position worthy of equal consideration. Neutrality doesn't exist for them. For them the rules are just a system of power that can either be used to oppress them or oppress the oppressors. That's how they see reality.
We should absolutely point this stuff out, but only point it out to sympathetic audience. Don't ever try to shame them with it, that's not possible.
I think it is more of a transferable power situation. The people with actual power grant some of it to useful idiots, teach the idiots that they are better than those who would oppose their will and then let them run wild. When the idiots are no longer useful or become too great a liability, the access to power is cut off, they are removed and the next batch is brought in.
This can backfire (the rise of a specific "Bohemian Corporal" comes to mind), but that requires at least some sort of charisma and strength of will which these bozos lack.
