You know, much like QAnon, I don't doubt that there are many proud boy believers. But you're right, the IDEA of "omg proud boys!!!" is far more dangerous.
It must have been about 5 years, when I was sitting in my office and I notice like half the floor cleared out (probably 5-10 people). They all came back like 30 minutes later, looking agitated. I asked what was up, and nobody said anything.
I heard later on the local news that there had a rumor--a RUMOR--that there was going to be a proud boys rally downtown, and the streets got mobbed with counterprotestors....but there was no one there. It was totally made up.
All these feckless 20-somethings had their dander up, thought they were going to punch some nazi white supremacists, and it was completely imaginary.
My town is as blue as it comes. Surrounded on several sides by red, thankfully, but the idea of a rightwing rally is ludicrous. Republicans in my town are lucky to get 10% of the vote.
I remember that day, I wish we did that more to waste their time and energy. Just phantom rally after phantom rally, no one ever showing up except for the thirty thousand least productive people in society over and over.
Personally I want the protest to be at the rose bowl, and then make sure the counter protestors enter the other side. The fights will continue to happen, might as well sell tickets.
I always thought it was hilarious how bent out of shape the left gets about the proud boys, they’re the faggiest most milquetoast group ever but people act like their some kind of Right Wing Khmer Rouge.
