I think the problem is the current society belief that if a man does XYZ a girl will fall for him. Everyone believes this. Liberals tell men to be nice. PUAs tell guys to be manipulative. Girls do this all the time too. "Treat a girl X way and she'll love you!" Bullshit.
So guys go on a date, follow the instructions, and get nothing. Because it's false. Being nice doesn't work. Being an asshole doesn't work. Nothing "works." A girl either gets wet for you or she doesn't. The reasons are mostly out of your control. You can't make a girl like you. However, if a girl does like you, almost nothing you do will make her not like you. That's the secret. Find a girl who's into you, and everything else is easy.
Every guy's situation is going to vary but yes, a lot of guys don't have friends or they do have friends and their friends are in the same situation as them. If they have friends, most of the friends have no one left to tap into within their friend circles. At least within my cohort of peers, most everyone has moved around lots for work. Hardly anyone stayed in the same city passed university for very long.
