At that point, if they're literally there for life for undeniably provable crimes, why not just execute them to get it over with? A bullet sounds less expensive than decades' worth of food, clothing and shelter. Not to mention, more failsafe.
It really is baffling. It would be far easier and cheaper. It has to be a corruption thing, because "prison cities" are a thing in South America. Guards are going to make a ton of money letting stuff be smuggled in.
Perhaps. A couple of the past few popes have suggested and teach that capital punishment is "impermissible" currently. This has caused a great deal of consternation, because the Church has long held the opposite. The quirk is that, in an attempt avoid contradiction, the new teaching says capital punishment is not "the right move" in light of modern society's capability to carry out life sentences. In this case, the mega-prison idea seems doomed to failure and when if fails it will be a social nightmare. Even under nupope teaching, these guys should have hung.
Last I checked, the bible was pretty liberal in its portrayal of killing those who needed killing. Murder-bears, plagues, salt-curses, chucking babies against the rocks, putting people to swords, burning witches, it's not got a lot of "don't punish people who are guilty".
I'm not saying locking criminals up is bad, it's actually the right thing to do. But, putting them in a situation where they way outnumber their guards or where an outside force could come in and litteraly have their own little army just waiting to be freed (that will hate everyone). Yeah, can't see that not coming to bite them. Better to spread them out over multiple well staffed facilities and show just a bit of humanity. Or, just be honest and do the death penalty for those deserving.

Could it be a Catholic thing?

Rope is even cheaper and can be used over and over.
Mark my words, that's going to end badly.
It looks like a cage for cannibalism. I'm not convinced this is the right answer to the violent gang problem - but I also don't have any better ideas.
El Salvador has been a murderous shithole all my life. I don't know how you fix it but surely there must be less depraved alternatives to this.

Prisoners always outnumber the guards. The guards have guns and there are supposed to be failsafes that prevent escapes.
Dunno how well this place is constructed.
This sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Just kill them all and move on if you're going to these levels.
If the timeline is feeling particularly ironic those will be what the inmates say to the guards at some point, too.
El Salvador's transformation into a country safer than most US cities has been impressive.
The full body, neck, and head tattoos are not doing anything to help me humanize the prisoners. They all look like random gang mobs in an FPS.
Cool designs though.
A waste of money if the sprinkler system can't spew out chlorine gas.
