Happy to say that my parents stopped watching Wheel of Time. My mom told me her and my dad were watching it when it came out and I was pretty surprised and my dad asked me why I didn't watch it since he knew I read the books. I told him because the showrunner seems to hate the books. My dad rolled his eyes and called me a book purist (he teases me about that as well with comic books because I don't watch many of those anymore).
I asked my mom why they stopped watching and my dad said "they went gay on us". Like me they are devout Christians (well I do my best to be) so they aren't interested in heavy lgbt content or at this point any so, also like me, they watch a lot of older content. I told them that in the books it is there but not really prevalent and not something you would expect someone who simply wants to adapt a book series to focus on. I used to think my parents where silly to stop watching shows for that reason but I can understand that mindset now.
The three most trendy groups in Hollywood right now are lgbt, women, and blacks (although I don't think straight black males are very desirable to hollywood). At one time a lot of people would've given shows a chance but not anymore. With me I am wary about anything made after 2014 when I really started to notice things.
Ironically I would say the obsession with diversity has made every show look exactly alike. You know with woke storytelling who will be the good and bad guy, who will be in charge, if a woman is a villain then there will be some justification, etc. With fantasy look at how "reflecting the modern world" just ruins it. They can't make their own stories to do the reflecting they want so they tear down classics. Critical Drinker once said that Willow, Wheel of Time, Witcher Blood Origin, and Rings of Power are essentially the assembly line creations... diverse fantasy 1, 2, and 3.
I'm a big reader and after Sci-Fi/Fantasy one of my favorite genres is murder mystery/cop drama and I've read books with gay detectives but the focus was on the mystery or finding the killer. Now it is everywhere and I'm convinced there is a rule that says that same sex couples always have to be shown in a positive light and the shill media acts like it is the best piece of cinema since Casablanca. Stranger Things Season 3 where instead of the reformed jock falling in love with the nerdy girl (which makes sense for a show that is a homage to the 80s) we get subverted expectations and I don't watch the last of us but I hear the critics loved the last episode.
Anyway, sorry for my rant, I'll now try to get my parents to listen to The Wheel of Time audiobook
Props to them for sticking to their principles and refusing garbage, but not surprised, as everything you have said has given me a very positive impression of your parents.
Even people who are not bothered by LGBTP content should avoid it. Because it's a sure marker that it's garbage, when they are shoehorning in modern politics. Obviously exceptions apply when it's tasteful and situationally appropriate, like in an Alan Turing biopic.
I've said one of the best cases of a gay character is in Warehouse 13. But I honestly think in America (I know the BBC has a policy) literally every show has to have specific diversity which kills entertainment. Like when I see shows about firefighters I always wonder how many petite women are actually firefighters because they seem to be all over.
Like I said I didn't mind a gay character here and there before but now that is all they seem to want to have in programming and if there is a romance subplot I want to see a man and a woman. There is a big market to cater to a variety of niche groups which is why I've said for years that if lgbt activists were really serious then they would work to have a channel/streaming network that produced strictly lgbt content instead of demanding straight people watch it in every show. All they have done is made it to where people won't give any show a chance once they see it. Similar with women, black people, etc.
It has to be in the US as well, at least unofficially. House of Cards included gratuitous homosexuality for literally no reason at all. And while they were at it, demonizing Russia for protecting children from this sort of thing. Things have only gotten worse since then. But who cares, I don't wash that filth anyway. My concern it that it corrupts future generations.
They are the entertainment.
Are you... are you saying that you are straight? Get on with the times. It's 2022.
There is plenty of LGBTP content. Believe me, I'd know (though obviously not about the TP part). There's tons of small budget productions. They don't want that. They want to enter other people's entertainment. They want to use entertainment to push 'THE MESSAGE', which is pretty sick because it's just brainwashing and propaganda.
There was a time when it was 'controversial', and where I regarded it as a positive. Because the makers had guts. Now it's the other way around, and it takes courage to have all your characters be straight. So now I like this. That is where creativity lies.
Yea it’s crazy how things have flipped
and thanks about the compliment of my parents. I completely understand what Twain meant when he said how his parents became so much smarter between age 14 and 21. I happily seek out their advice now but when I was a teen I thought I knew it all.
Oscar Wilde also said that he was not young enough to know everything.
That said, your parents may be good, but I see a lot of parents nowadays who are sheer horrorcows.
My favorite Oscar Wilde quote is “there are two tragedies in life.. not getting what you want, and getting it).
Seeing 2 dudes kiss is just uncomfortable for most individuals. The globohomo can brainwash multippe generations, but it will never feel right. Most will not say ewww, but for sure people will avoid.
Luckily most of the world doesnt like that kinda shit. Doubt middle east or africa will accept gay stuff even if we nuke them. Russia outlaw promotion of that kinda behavior. China and developed asian countries still shames gays, at least among families. Id assume south america, with their strong catholic/christian values still resists gay stuff too.
At some point we will use our military to "fight for gay rights" in other countries. Make other countries as faggy as ours. Lol.
For most of the world, our immediate social groups are, overwhelmingly, culturally and ethnically/racially homogeneous. Internally, even subconsciously, we register these leftist depictions of daily life as comically curated multiracial tableaux. The end result is deeply ironic: bizarre media intended to appeal to “everyone” ends up appealing to no one.
For my part, I’d rather watch a Korean television show full of Koreans than any western production featuring a carefully selected array of human identities roughly akin to a Pokémon managerie.
Yea. I tend to be friends with a lot of traditional minded Christians but I guess that proves your point lol. I’ve been meaning to get into Korean shows.
Netflix has a bunch. They are automatically better than most western shows simply because the homogeneous ethnic/cultural makeup of Korean shows is instantly believable for any viewer.
It’s comforting when people look similar in a show. It immediately creates a sense of community, if not just societal cohesion.
And never once have I thought “why aren’t there more whites” in a Korean drama. If anything, any other race of casting whatsoever is questionable, or should serve a specific plot point.
I honestly think that a lot of normies are starting to catch on to what is going on and that it isnt just a handful of weirds, but the entire clown show. I know people like to hate on them for not seeing what we see, but a lot of them just want to go along and arent on the internet to see what we see.
Yesterday when I was going to work, I heard on the comedy radio show I listen to (which is all a bunch of normie-tier comedians), they were talking about Airplane the movie being in the news for a book about the making of it coming out. But when their news person said "Airplane is in the News", the host, without pause, said "No wait, dont tell me. A bunch of Woke shits are trying to cancel that too now, right?" So normies are starting to catch on that the Woke are not good people and hate the things they normally like.
I have also seen my fiancé starting to get the sort of videos I watch on Youtube. Stuff like Critical Drinker, Nerdrotic, etc. But she has largely wanted to remain out of the culture war because she hates both sides (although has always hated the Woke more than us). I know I didnt show her those videos, she found them on her own. And so now she is even starting to learn about some of the crazy shit I havent told her about like Woman King.
Which is why I cant be pessimistic. The future is fine for most of us (at least in the US). This has all happened before, it will happen again. Just find the place you can keep going and we will endure.
Yea, at some point the tide will turn. I love Drinker, Nerdrotic, G&G, Eric July, etc. I think one step is to start making our own content. I bought Eric July's comic and will buy the next one. Very soon I plan to buy Shadversity and Razorfists books. Shad is also coming out with a sci-fi book series and he calls it the Orville for Star Wars.
Airplane is an amazing movie. As someone who loves Leave it to Beaver, June Cleaver speaking jive is classic.
I hated Orville. Just saying
That’s how he described it. I felt it was better trek than current trek but that isn’t saying much. But I’ll check out his book
Try The Prefect, by Alastair Reynolds if you haven't already. Hard sci fi + cop drama. It's part of the 'Revelation Space' universe, Revelation Space being another book (first and maybe best) in the series, but they can be read out of order and only Prefect has the cop angle.
Reynolds is a bit woke in his real life utterances - which might explain why he's been a bit shit since his earliest inspirations - but there's not much of it in his best novels.
Cool! Thanks. I love that combination of sci-fi and cop story. Like A Scanner Darkly by Phillip K Dick
Case in point the Equalizer movies. Denzel was awesome.
Then they cast Kween Latifah and another franchise down the drain.
Did make me sail the high seas for the original series though, so I suppose that's a positive.
Edward Woodward will always be my Equaliser
I’ve been meaning to watch the original. I remember it as a little kid but my parents didn’t watch it much. Denzel is one of my favorites and I liked his movies but I want to see the original
It started with downplaying of straight white males and now I see it as just anti-male across the board. But I think it was Jeremy or Eric July who mentioned that black male characters in modern entertainment are usually not masculine
I know I asked this before either on here or rkia2 but what's the best Wheel of Time book to start with? Just go by release or chronological? Or is there a really good one that'll get me hooked and then go back from the start? I been meaning to give it a go for decades now lol figure it's time.
Also, shame that in the 2000s there was a time where we had Sin City, 300 and Watchmen on the big screens and I thought "wow the future of comic film adaptions are gonna be awesome"
Boy how wrong I was. Not only did woke trash killed tv and movies, they also killed comics. But it's okay, like you said, I got old content.
I would suggest just starting with book one. The book has a ton of detail which I’m fine with. If I like the author I can tolerate it but just a heads up. The story is great though. That’s why it’s really annoying to hear about what happened with the adaptation. I agree about those movies. I thought Watchmen was a good movie. Problem with comic book movies now is that they openly say they don’t care about the comics
