There are some fascinating developments in these rural areas that have been hollowed out by neoliberalism. There has been a rise of right-wing militias in those places, and the state has cannibalized itself so badly that the militias even act as an ersatz police force in some instances.
It is that type of development that will come to pose the biggest danger to our current elite. Places like that may end up building themselves back up without the system's help so they won't be dependent on it like all current elites are, but again, it's a long way off for any of that potentially leading to a civil war.
