What I meant to say was even in nature, viruses with extreme lethality tends to burn themselves out due to the fact the hosts die out, only leaving the less-lethal strains to spread.
Spicy plot-line for a movie, but it's far more likely what occurred was the inevitable evolution of viruses to being more transmissible and less deadly.
