Subs have had issues lately as well, unfortunately
How so?
there are very very few fansub groups out there now those that do exist are going through a dwindling backlog of really really obscure anime released once on laserdisc during a blue moon on a freezing day in July
most of the stuff released on the bootleg websites (nya.si etc) is just ripped from the western localiser (Crunchyroll netflix etc) so those versions are very much at the whims of whatever chucklefuck does the subs
The rise of easily accessed mainstream sources for both dubs AND subs like Crunchyroll/Funimation has basically killed the fansub industry. They still exist, but only for the most obscure of things that don't get translated otherwise.
Which means the same issues dubs have, are now also plaguing subs. The only thing you miss is the bad voice acting, but the scripts are still fucked either way.
Yeah, I notice there's a ton of localization in subs now that wasn't there back in the heyday of fansubbing. Back in the day instead of trying to localize shit, half the time you'd get a literal translation and a note from the subber explaining the cultural significance of whatever it was that didn't really have a good english line equivalent. It was nice to learn something of a different culture. Now it's just a butchered script and we barely even get honorifics being translated properly.
And because of the prevalence of "keikaku means plan," there was a culture around the entire thing that just assumed you probably knew shit and they didn't even need to waste brain power trying to figure out how to translate it.
It also gatekept the normies out, which is always a good thing.
Faggots try to inject their faggotry into the translations.
Mostly the mainstream one(s) only. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSGgGZfFlGU
