So for Christmas along with buying the usual gift cards for the family I like to get myself a book series. I also decided to buy my first Manga. With the Manga I decided to see if I can find a cheap copy of Fist of the Notth Star since I saw it a few months ago and love it. If I can’t find it I’ll get Robotech since it’s the first anime I ever was exposed to thanks to my older brother.
I’ve been debating between the Witcher or Elric books. I’ve been told since I like Conan and Ice and Fire books I’d love Elric but since Witcher is being butchered I kinda want to read it (similar reason why I bought Wheel of Times books when the show was announced). I eventually plan on getting the other book series in early spring but which should I buy first?
It is required whenever someone inquires after a new fantasy series to mention Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe. It is really a cut above the rest. This is technically a spoiler (but only if you're braindead), but BotNS is between SciFi and Fantasy. In my opinion Book of the New Sun is to SciFi what Lord of the Rings is to fantasy.
Wow. That is high praise! I’ll have to check it out
Cool. I hope you get a chance to read it, but don't dive too deeply into wikis or anything like that while looking into it. The reader is meant to struggle a bit trying to figure out what the heck the narrator is talking about.
Seconded. A great book, and I don't see it mentioned nearly enough.
I liked the first Witcher book a lot, it has interesting takes on various monsters. It is an entertaining read.
Cool! Thanks. What sucks about the show is that I remember Cavill being so passionate about it an instead of utilizing his knowledge they decided to do their own thing
I liked the first 2 Witcher books, 3 through 7 (the Witcher saga) i found terribly disappointing.
Elric books were fantastic when i read them 20 odd years ago.
It also doesn't have much in terms of the later overarching plot, as far as I remember, so you can easily not read the rest.
The Last Wish can indeed be treated as just a collection of short stories, but those stories do lay down the foundation of the saga and load up the Chekhov's guns (especially in "The Question of Price").
Absolutely possible as I have read it years ago.
Concerning the books, you could try buying the first one in both series, reading them, and then continue on from the one you liked better.
Good idea. Didn’t think of that. I guess I figured I’d like both. But I’ll look for them at the bookstore
berserk
That'll just ruin all manga for the OP going forward.
Grasses status: ON
I'm gonna suggest Dresden Files if you're a fan of Urban Fantasy.
Actually have that one in my massive “to read” pile
The Saxon Tales by Bernard Cornwell. It's historical fiction and not fantasy, but it's an excellent series. Highly recommend it.
