I had a friend from college who hand-wrote his application to Blizzard in the style of an old scroll as a set of skills in XP form. Mailed it using one of those cylinder mailers you'd use for posters. I think he even used a quill pen. Thing was a work of art. Didn't get the job, and he was one of the truly gifted ones.
I see things like this, and I think about that sometimes.
That would definitely make hr and whoever had to look over 100s of applications super happy to deal with instead of the standard resume /s. At a small company sending that in would probably go over well, but the sheer number of applicants that’s was never going to be appreciated there. Those kind of things go over better at gdc or industry events.
I got hired at Blizzard in part because as a cover letter on my intern application, I wrote a late-night TV infomercial advertising myself. A decade ago, that kind of flavor definitely got you noticed positively.
HR doesn't deserve to be happy.
The lead programmer, designer, and artist has to go through the ones hr passes on, and if you want a job you should want them being happy when they see your name.
Which is why engineering departments so often do whatever they can to circumvent the HR processes that treat such applications as an annoyance.
Though I think it did end up getting him an on-site interview. This was back when they were still small enough to appreciate such things.
Not sure if you are aware of this, but men are treated like dogshit in Asia as well.
Japanese men are so overworked and their women are so petulant that they're just dropping out of the dating market and becoming NEETs.
Well no shit, their whole religion is about, and forgive me for saying this without irony. Patriarchy.
Works pretty damned well for them though.
Ok, fine. We'll look at China instead.
Parents aborted all their female babies because they wanted men who would take care of them, while having little hope of attracting a desirable woman to create a life for themselves with.
