In Jadwiga's case, it was basically a bit of legalese jigger-pigging to basically avoid what happened with Elizabeth I (as seems to me, at least), at least until the elites (moreso than The People, as usual) wrapped their heads around the idea of a ruling queen not giving up her birthright just because she got married for to continue the dynastic bloodline.
