I just wanted to make a separate post to get recommendations for the 5 weekends of October. I personally suggest Noroi for Asian/ supernatural horror, however what has come to my attention is the love for the broad depth of categories that horror provides so with Noroi in contention for supernatural I want to present 5 horror categories as we have five October Saturdays.
The categories will be as follows: 1. Zombies 2.supernatural/ ghosts 3. Slasher 4. Haunted house and 5. Creature feature.
Pick your best and the highest voted in each category will be the main picks, however I will make an honorable mentions list after the main picks. Great mentions so far are- The Thing, Event Horizon, Evil Dead, ReAnimator, Living Dead (multiple), personal recommendations are tale of two sisters, Noroi, sleep away camp, Friday the 13th part 2, tucker and dale versus evil, and the original Halloween (Halloween 3 is also a gem)
Brotherhood of the Wolf counts as a horror I think. It is certainly very good.
Counts under creature feature!
Old but gold, they went ham with the costumes in this one.
As someone who's not a big horror fan, I'm glad to see Tucker and Dale Versus Evil mentioned. I love the ones that play between genres a bit.
In that vein, I'm throwing out there Slither, which is another horror comedy, but leaning at least a bit more toward the horror side than Tucker and Dale does. Slither is a good fucking movie. I'll also put down Scream (1). Scream would be slasher, and I guess Slither would be (space) zombies or creature feature.
“Oh hidy ho officer, we've had a doozy of a day. There we were minding our own business, just doing chores around the house, when kids started killing themselves all over my property.”
Still my favorite quote of all horror/ comedy movies
dead end was so fucked up and I loved every bit of it, also a great cast for an underscored horror film
Ray Wise and Lin Shaye really sell that movie.
I just love the overplay theme of that movie, it's amazing. The poor put upon rednecks and the invading college kids.
it was almost on the nose that the city yuppies were the real problem while the local law harassed the yocals. it honestly was probably unintentionally based, especially for the time frame.
I'd be very curious to rewatch Slither and see how it holds up.
Dracula (Horror of Dracula in the U.S.) from Hammer Studios would be a really fun Creature Feature. It's a loose adaptation of Dracula starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. It's from the late 50s with lots of bright red technicolor blood.
Also, I really second the recommendation of Sleepaway Camp. I won't give away the twist, but it is very, very relevant to current issues.
I was going to say the reality of sleepaway camp is going to be Al to real in the coming days
I agree. Felissa is lovely. I met her at a con, too.
A lot of great stuff had been thrown out already, I would like to add The Changeling (1980) for supernatural and Deep Red for slasher.
The changeling is definitely a must watch, the story structure and pacing makes The Shining pale in comparison, at least in my opinion.
Bone Tomahawk for either slasher or creature feature.
I think hellraiser would be under supernatural. Same as ghosts/ possession’s which it why I kept it separate from haunted houses
Don’t get me wrong, I loved hellraiser so much I bought the hellbound heart and read it.
it went away from the abstract horror of the pursuit of pleasure leading to damnation which was very biblical to the gore porn of people being ripped apart by chains. Hollywood for you.
Remove one word and it sounds like someone went into a coma in the mid-90s, woke up in 2022 and tried to come up with a reason for what they see.
All awesome picks. Burnt Offering is definitely an underrated gem in both film and book format! Night of the Demons is a classic 80s gore and fun movie.
I would put cube under slasher as it is killing for gore factor, however still a great concept and unique for the genre
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
Predator (1987)
The Ordeal aka Calvaire (2004)
Funny Games (either one)
Honestly the first two are a pass because no film version of body snatcher has lived up to the written aside from maybe slither. Funny games however is a great choice for slasher/ survival horror, but to me was super unrealistic because “wahman”. Haven’t watched Calvaire but it’s now on my list!
Did Funny Games have unrealistic wammening? Been a couple years since I last saw it but I don't recall that. Some of Germany's cuckedness came through in the general vibe, and I remember (spoiler alert) the invaders disabled the men first, obviously because they're more of a threat, but it didn't really have any unrealistic "wahmen stronk/smart" that I can recall. Though I do give the movie some leeway due to the (true) fact that people can get crazy strong when they're in a life or death situation.
Fuck, I do despise that ending though.
the American version definitely did, the problem with the final girl trope is it always ends with a woman unrealistically overpowering a man
I've enjoyed The Void (supernatural/lovecraftian horror)
Definitely a good watch and very original/ not woke, which is next to impossible anymore
You already mentioned Event Horizon (aka: unofficial Warhammer 40k prequel), so I had to go for different one.
I also liked "The Lazarus Effect" (even though it starred Olivia Wilde)
Funniest slasher film ever: Necromaniac: Schizophreniac 2 (2003)
Irreversible.
Doesn't fit into any of your categories but it is terrifying and scarier then any slasher you'll find.
I don’t need a sticky u/DomitiusOfMassilia, but you can be my final girl all the same
Girls?
Are those men with anatomically correct bussies?
Depends on the sequel, Aliens, Halloween, Scream, Nightmare on elm st, etc all major franchises that have constantly brought back Final girls
Nancy dies in Nightmare on Elm St three.
But is brought back in the live movie/ acting world nightmare on elm street.
Same with Jamie lee Curtis in H20? But is brought back after
Halloween is a bit of weird franchise. The continuity is all over the place. There's several different timelines of movies.
She did, but was also in every one if I remember right. Aside from the rob zombie films
"Dog Soldiers", it's old and the special effects are pretty outdated but it still is one of the best werewolf movie out there.
"Wolfman", it's a bit cliché but the Anthony Hopkins, Benicio Del Toro and Hugo Weaving triumvirate really carried that movie.
