Though it was probably just designed to be a tourist spot and nothing else, there is a huge problem we are getting and no it isn't all climate change
We are all getting our water majority from fresh water reservoirs both above and below, but that can't fully sustain our current demand and refill in time. It's why having desalination is important but got to be the modern ones that don't have as much waste product. If you can ease the burden on fresh water sources then you won't have as many droughts or places becoming deserts again
The only sustainable population is a stable one. "Sustainable growth" is a corporate crack-pipe dream.
Lots of places around the world are suffering from overtourism even without local environmental changes - look at Venice finally getting sick of the tourist industry's bullshit.
The US diverts 1.5 million acre-feet of water from the Colorado river to Mexico every year in exchange for nothing and a sodomized border. That can end.
Feels like it's time to quote Chief Hanlon from Fallout: New Vegas
Back west, you don't see too many of these. Lakes, I mean. Natural or man-made. Any kind, really. We neglected the dams or pumped all the water out a long time ago. Owens, Isabella, the San Luis. Drained the aquifers of everything they had. Just a lot of mud and dust now.
These were the projects of 20th century American supremacy over everything - Manifest Destiny, there wasn't anything America couldn't do including making deserts into Eden. Even if it was never a good idea and sure to fail sooner or later, it was fun while it lasted.
And these assfucks in government want to whinge about conquering climate change now that Manifest Destiny has reached its end game, is where money cannot overcome the forces of Mother Nature.
Anything is "sure to fail" when people lack the will and ability to keep it running. And there is no will to increase the water supply on the West Coast.
They built one desalination plant near San Diego and its continued operation is an endless political struggle, and with San Onofre gone and Diablo Canyon soon to be gone it's unlikely there will be another.
Reminds me of the North Shore Beach and Yacht Club on the Salton Sea. That whole area has a fascinating history, and now you go there and it's all sand and a bunch of road and infrastructure for suburbs whose houses were never built.
I remember the first time I took a road trip there 5-ish years ago to see what it was like. I told my mom I went there, and she replied, "oh yeah I spent a weekend there in the early 70s. There was some parade going on; it was nice".

Or just go the elitist approach of eugenics.

I need to actually finish that game some day...
it's supposed to be a desert. us wasting our time and money will not change that.

I like this guy, he's got some good videos.
A lot of it also had to do with giving the Army Corps of Engineers something to do. Seriously.
