I have seen houses in some nice neighborhoods with big flags out front - I assume military families - but before 9/11 it was rare. Nobody talks about how disgusting it is for these pricks to wave their Venezuelan and Mexican pride in our faces and chant "La Raza!" but Americans are chauvinist jingoistic nativists for shouting USA at the Olympics. Especially galling is the treatment of the fairly rare American migrants INTO these Central and South American countries. For the latest example, see the cool reception of California yuppies trying to move to Mexico City. It's like the old-timey "Yankee Go Home!"
Expats who mistakenly buy real estate in Mexico or elsewhere south of the border find their assets can be seized at any time for any reason with zero recourse. Never mind the bribes needed to do any sort of business.
