The entire world was mostly islands and the kind of people you'd find on island nations. Which, would make them all varying shades of brown because that's how those things work.
So, regardless of intent, the world was built in a way that justifies and works with that. Instead of the now where there is no logical way for it to make sense how X race is in such a place. I can cringe at her platitude, but at least she put in the effort to make it work.
This is in contrast to the second trilogy which contains characters who exist just to hate women to create the ability to rant and preach about how hating women is bad.
