Oni, Septera Core, Drakan, RE2 and RE1, the longest journey 1 and 2 - I liked Tomb Rider but I was not that much in to it. You can add Diablo 1 and 2 as they did have specific female characters you got to play with.
There were a lot of good games that had female protagonists or allowed you to create or chose your own character.
One of her lies is that women did not play games because they were not designed for girls. There is some truth to it but not in any way Anita would like. Guys and girls like different type of games so if you want more girls to play you are going to make more games for girls - walking simulators, candy crush games, animal crossing, sims but if you can make games for girls then why it is wrong to make game for guys, why can't we have fighting games or adventure games designed for guys.
She claims that if the game was designed for girls, that to say have a female main character that is not sexy and men are all idiots, then a lot more girls would play the game. I've seen no evidence of that. I've not seen girls say o wow I like this game that is objectively worse do to politics more then if it was done in an organic manner like older games.
I agree. I’ve said for years that there is nothing wrong with making things that appeal to girls/women. My beef is the attack on make hobbies. The Sims are a guilty pleasure for me. I can definitely see how it would appeal to more women.
Septerra Core? Damn that takes me back. It was like a western JRPG on PC. A friend loaned it to me and while I wouldn't exactly call it a hidden gem, it was really underrated. I think it came in a dual pack with SHOGO MAD. Same friend also gave me the adventure game Beyond Atlantis. That one was shitty for a game but it was another example of a female protag and we never thought about that being odd at the time.
I was a young kid when I played Septerra Core, it was the first high fantasy JRPG style game I've ever played and it was amazing. I would probably not like it today, I do not remember gameplay wise to be good. I'm not a fan of the final fantasy type combat. I did like the magic combos. I remember how amazing it was to discover that you could combine spell cards.
But to the point, it was a great game with a female character but no one on the Anita side would even acknowledge that this type of games existed for a long time.
I loved that game's worldbuilding and the art style, it was so delightfully different from anything else I'd played up to that point.
Too bad they tried to stretch the playtime with those stupid fucking mazes, especially in the second half of the game IIRC. Those were just outright painful. I ended up following a guide to get through them.
Also that game had a funny murderbot party member years before KOTOR.
I forgot about the reprogramed robot. The characters in that game were so interesting when I played them.
You had an assassin guy with robot arms, a cute shy blond girl that had robot legs, giant robot dog etc. Interesting characters all around, I hope it never gets a "modern day" remake.
On the same note of interesting companions Planescape Torment, another game that does not need a remake. I would love a graphic upgrade but I would rather play it as is then get butchered in HD.
I should replay the longest Journey again, thanks for reminding me.
Seriously though, no one has issues with female characters if they're well written. Heck, in almost all MMO's I play(ed) female characters because 99% of the time they are better looking. What Rockstar's gonna do is make it woke, they already told us so. Even outside of this I don't think they deserve the money with how they grossly monetized GTA online and abandoned RDR:Online.

Exactly. But to listen to people like Anita Sarkessian you would think women were banned from playing games
