It's not truthful though. The sanctions were always being directed against their own citizens, not Russia. This is part of the propaganda by pretending the sanctions "failed" when they actually achieved exactly what they were intended to do.
Yep. It was all about deliberately torpedoing fossil fuels so they could unilaterally enforce the green new deal. And the green new deal is simply managed deindustrialization of the first world by redistributing our quality of life to the third world.
I'm trying to think of anyway the sanctions 'succeeded' but coming up blank:
Targeting Russian people to sow discord and resentment towards Putin = Failed, from all accounts they went to heavy so it DID become everyone against Russia so people went to the strong man for safety
Enforcing a green new deal = majority failure, the protests in Netherlands show that and Putin KNOWS Europe doesn't have enough gas for winter and may be ensuring they never do
United front against a hostile power = failed, African countries told the US to fuck off not buying wheat from Russia and Saudi's were open to selling oil in Rubbles
Using the war as a propaganda smokescreen for policies within countries = Failed, yeah no one really cares about Ukraine anymore, it's the new Syria where we did care a bit but went on too long and so got bored. Everyone now cares about the cost of bread, milk and petrol.
Using this conflict as a deterrent against copycats = China, seriously the only reason they haven't tried yet is not much of a navy, Taiwanese would bomb the factories as a fuck you and the giant Howitzers they have pointed at mainland China.
Maybe I'm missing something but all the sanctions did was show how impotent the West was and if that's the goal, well that was successful.
You know this is the same paper who called for war on Russia just a week ago, right? I thought it was the same guy, but it turns out its' a different Simon.
Looks like this is just an old-fashioned lefty who dislikes sanctions, and stuck with his principles.
Russian GDP is still expected to be -6% this year by the latest estimate, though it was originally projected to be much worse, as high gas prices compensated for a lot of the losses. Oil prices have already been falling, so if that continues the outlook will be revised downward again.
Saying "Putin is stronger than ever" is just laughable, though.
The only surprise here is The Guardian reporting something approaching news if you squint. The content of said news was well-known to anyone with a working brain from the very beginning.
I think all the sanctions have proven so far is how far western societies have fallen in education, critical thinking and independence. This is what happens when we (as a society) accept feminism as sane and logical instead of an insane cult.

They'll never admit their wrong, and they're certainly not going to reverse course.
Who will they blame? It starts with a "W" and ends with "hite Supremacists" no doubt.

How big are Russia's currency and gold reserves?
