Might have done it solely because he was confident that he was going to end up guilty regardless of the lawyer?
Alternatively, might have done it for more sinister purposes, IE threatened into not taking a lawyer.
Either that or couldn't find a lawyer willing to represent someone the CIA was willing to plant CP on.
