I have had a sneaking suspicion (for awhile now) that as clumsy as the most obviously observed campaigns are, ChiCom PsyOps are at a level that we as a species should find frankly terrifying. I think their pursuance down the tech tree in that way is beyond our current ability to comprehend. Some real Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri-level shit that we couldn't see coming.

Because they are only so advanced and scary because of their absurd numbers, willingness to sacrifice those numbers casually, and have no real reserves about committing horrific acts as long as it advances them.
But, like the rats, its all barely hanging together by sheer force of luck and the lack of real resistance from anyone else. If a single nation of worth opposed China, the damage to their paper mache economy would cripple them.
Is it a paper mache economy though, really? What is an economy? Is it paper money, or the capacity to build real-world things? Also, how does this reconcile with their ability to put out a handful of YouTube videos that cause the entirety of Western Christendom to collapse itself and end Republican Governance over a common cold?
Its paper mache because the stability it has is barely extant. If they didn't throw endless lives into the grinder daily to prop it up, it wouldn't even be able to limp on for a few years. So to answer your question, its the capacity to build real world things. Something they lack because you can physically watch daily videos of their roads, buildings, machines and all else just fail completely because they are made of zipties and hope. They rely entirely on exporting and external funding for those exports to mask their internal chaos.
Also a bunch of towel heads stole a plane and crashed them, which kickstarted over a decade of wars but I doubt you would call the Middle East some super powerhouse either.
The problem is that their 'paper mache' economy, are the pillars propping up all western nations. Our economic pillars are made from this paper mache.
There are few non-western nations of consequence that would survive/thrive in a Chinese+western economic collapse.
I don't think they're all that advanced. There's a symbiosis at play - Christianity has made the only force capable of resisting them particularly unwilling to say "Fuck the chinks, fuck their money, and anyone working for them can fucking swing." which is what most pre-Christian civilizations would have done in response to China buying out their media, politicians, and academics.
All it takes to turn the tide back is a little less kindness and a little more hatred. It's not even too late to start.
That's not symbiosis, that's opportunistic infection, and nigh-insurmountable subversion. Look at New Zealand, and Australia, and Wales, and Scotland, and Ireland, and Canada. And that's only the most obvious.
