They are Great Apes from an evolutionary standpoint.
However, a monkey has a tail, while an ape does not.
Always remember that it scientifically accurate to randomly call any human being an ape at any time for any reason.
More important as a diagnostic is the ability to brachiate. This is why the Barbary "Ape" is misnamed. It's just a tail-less monkey.
Only Apes can "stick 'em up".
