I don't see why you are so surprised. The 'educated' of a country have traditionally always been the most likely to adhere to the ruling ideology of a country - Christianity in the middle ages and wokeism today.

Someone whose life is created by the system, who has been immersed in the system for a long time and whose importance was created by the system, is not going to turn on the system which elevated them above the common people.
If they question Fauci and his credentials, they question their own credentials as well.
They have a very strong incentive to believe the ruling powers are good, as the ruling powers have benefitted them greatly. And higher education always reinforces the information that the ruling class wishes to reinforce.
This is why most revolutionaries of any stripe are traditionally the rural and working class. The idea of a lower class uprising is not just a communist delusion, the communists hit on historical reality there. The people with the least stake in the system as it is are the people most likely to burn it down.

I'm a first generation member of the Professional Managerial Class. The first 3 months of watching my friends and colleagues lose their goddamned minds permanently reversed about 20 years' worth of "we're a better class of people" propaganda.
It pained me to see it, but watching their total defeat by their own hands was the only way that could happen.
