You're going to be shocked, but I brew my own coffee too. I don't get the 'dedication' part. It takes 5 minutes to roast a batch. Really don't even have to look at it until I start hearing first crack.
Size of the batches is what I was referring to. I roast half-pound batches every 3 days, which for me is optimal for all sorts reasons but sometimes I wish I could roast a week's worth at a time.
With a popper I'd probably have to roast every day, or do multiple batches. Which maybe wouldn't be so bad to roast the next day's beans while you're brewing this day's, but it's nice to not have to do that.
Unless with some practice it's possible to do larger batches? Back when I tried it in college we could only roast enough at a time for a single pot.
Ah, one 5 minute roast does enough for two full quart batches in the french press, at 'around' 32 grams of roasted beans each. I also drink a lot of tea, so my demands are not high.
They've come out with their own air popper design that they rate at 100 grams per batch. Maybe I'll upgrade if this one breaks, but their cheapo air popper does more than I need with minimal effort.
If/when my drum roaster dies I may try to make one out of a rotisserie toaster oven. Which is basically all my roaster is, except with a fancier temperature controller.

The vertical spin type? Then you'd mount some kind of cage on the rod? Sounds workable.
