I was pretty active in some fan forums and I pretty much called it being a flop based on pre-release announcements. It seemed like they were pushing so hard for the "game as a service" and very little about the features at release.

What specifically pissed me off was their proposed 2 character limit on public servers unless you were a paypig. Something that was designed from the ground up to annoy f2p players into paying must have made other bad design decisions and cut corners elsewhere.

2 characters is a terrible limit. Games like Path of Exile have 20+ free slots... But wasn't the rerelease the only one that was F2P? I think the original required a sub to play.

i dont remember the number of classes at launch but i know it was more than 2 so you couldn't even play all the classes (on the equivilent of bnet) without deleting an existing char

Man talk about a throwback from a seemingly bygone era.

I remember playing this game maybe a decade or so ago? The thing is, the premise and story was pretty cool. If you can find it, the opening cinematic is really awesome.

The problem is that the game itself was trash, but not because the devs didn't try but because it was just a concept that seemed to be too much for what they were trying to do.

Perfect World seemed to capture the concept a lot better with the game Remnant: From The Ashes, or Funcom's The Secret World.

The main issue was that the enemy AI was terrible, there were a lot of clipping and geometry issues with getting stuck on stuff, and the maps weren't very interesting or entertaining to play through, and the combat was pretty clunky.

I hate to sound like a modern day hipster, but I actually think a Soulsborne formula for a Hellgate: London remake would be pretty awesome, similar to Remnant but just a lot more grimdark and hopeless.

HGL was a game from famed former devs of another beloved rpg franchise. Some say it was the cost that ruined it, others that it was rushed, what do y'all say? Pic is related but obv not rendered ingame.

I remember thinking it was pretty fun, I played it not too long ago, it runs on a toaster and the ideas/setting are interesting.

I’d really like something similar made nowadays. The Secret World comes close but it’s not really the same.

The release was definitely a Trainwreck. Despite the glaring flaws, I had fun with it.

I never played the game but didn’t Hellgate:London have some lawsuit brought against the developers about some church being included? I remember reading an article back in the day that concluded that it was more about some type of copyright that the developers didn’t get permission or pay the church for including them so they tried to get the church removed from the game.
