What a shit article. They lead with some never before seen device and fail to give ANY information on it.
"Hey, there's this unique and interesting device that hasn't been covered before. We should write an article about it! 700 words about dancing grannies and none about the device itself sounds like a great idea!" - some Guardian brainlet
It's not unique. It's a signal blocker that stops their speakers from working.
I knew someone who had something like it because their neighbor was always blasting rock music at 1-2am to relive their teenage years. Big midlife crisis, that one.
What's a "signal blocker"? A simple wireless jammer that blocks Bluetooth? That would be rather boring. Or are we talking something electromagnetic that fucks with speaker coils? That would be interesting. The article calls it "stun gun-style device", whatever that means..

Yeah, a jammer that blocks Bluetooth. They're just making it sound special.

Break-hip comps are totally on the menu, though.
It takes an enormous amount of energy to cancel sound waves over even a small area, so it's obviously something much less exciting.
In this case, it's just an IR flashlight that acts as a long-range remote, blinking common versions of mute. More info here.
So basically the same thing that people use in gyms/airports to turn off CNN?
