Yeah, I agree with you, the massive overconsumption of mind-altering drugs is a symptom, not the disease. I think the real reason is massive cognitive dissonance, we're all bombarded from a very young age with media telling us to just be ourselves and we'll be the hero in the end. The role of a father is to explain to his children, especially boys, that the world doesn't revolve around them and they have to better themselves and be productive members of society.
When the dad isn't around, all the boy has these stories with nothing to balance them out, and then he goes to school and it turns out everything he believes is false, he's not an ugly duckling who will grow up into a beautiful swan just due to his nature, he's just an ugly sped with bad hygiene and nobody gives a shit about him because he has nothing to offer. After this reality check, most of these boys turn to more fiction and just stay in their goon cave forever playing videogames and jacking it to hentai, and a small percentage will lash out and go to town all those chads and stacies he feels took his destiny from him. They didn't, his family and our deranged society did.
Of course it affects women/girls as well, they're being told by a barrage of media that they don't have to work on themselves, there's a prince on a white horse waiting for them when they're finally "ready to settle" with multiple drug habits, cellulitis, insufferable personality, and possibly a kid or two. Those don't turn into school shooters, women don't do that; they turn into bitter hags who viscerally hate the next generation of girls who are still pretty and desirable, and they go on and make more of these insidious media to drag those girls down to their level, or they become middle managers in some big company and ruin the lives of their younger, prettier female employees, because they're #girlboss yas kween slay. I'm not sure what's more insidious, to be honest.
Oh and there are some curious cases where men become so feminized they go the women's route - see Moviebob, he presumably has XY chromosomes but he acts like a hateful middle-aged hag.
