I’ve read DuBois and while he may have some good points (like talking about frivolous spending he had seen from blacks) he was part of the intellectual community so he had ideas that seemed great on paper. Plus he was always in the “upper crust”. Washington saw reality and knew the best opportunity for former slaves was learning a trade.
Always look at outcomes. Washington did more for the advancement of blacks than DuBois ever could have dreamed of. Tuskegee created the black men who bridged the gap for racial acceptance, the NAACP seeks to create more divisions.
The spending issue is wild. I have to track down the study, but it basically confirmed that most of the "wealth gap" among similarly salaried racial groups was almost 100% down to spending behavior. Black households, on average, spent way too much money on cars, televisions, and clothing.
Also you will find poverty rates similar across race lines when there is a mother and father in the home. Almost as if two parent homes are a way to avoid poverty.
