A large portion of the population needs some sort of religious ideology. Whether that's an emperor, a god, rampant degenerate consumerism, their self righteous political ideology etc. But they need something.
It's just that Christianity was designed to foster society growth, whereas the many new religions are designed for decay.
Just under half of the population is actively fascist, they just disagree about who is in charge. They seek a strongarm leader, be it in the sky or in the cybernetwork or in their voting box, or all three. They'll pick which one to use based on their ideologies, but in the end, they're all choosing Boot-to-face-forever.
There were a lot of Atheists that, it turned out, really were just angry at God and found a new one.
The way I say it, these Atheists never went through "Deconversion" which is a slow process, involving a lot of introspection, that basically collapses your ability to believe in a God. It also creates enough Skepticism to prevent you from falling into other lines of religious thinking.
That being said, I know think that a prediction I had several years ago is likely to come true. I feel like Liberation Theology is going to take over the Social Justice Racket, and all of these Atheists that tolerate Atheism+ and are rabid SJWs... they are all going to convert to Liberation Theology and be the biggest bible-thumpers we've ever seen.

No. I think we're looking at a the next great religious revival in the West. Genuinely: Jordan Peterson might become a Saint or Saint like figure in the future as weird as that sounds. The Left will take all their woke nonsense, and adapt it into Liberation Theology which is popular among South American Marxist Catholics.
I base my morality on my life and what seems to benefit everyone the most from my perspective.
