How do you respond to people who tell you that you are being selfish if you don’t treat Covid like the zombie apocalypse where millions are dying each day?
I live in Texas and the governor recently lifted the mask mandate. Now a lot of businesses will still require them but so many people are freaking out and local news agencies are only talking to “experts” that think this is a horrible decision. I fear this may cost him the election because now the local and national media will go into hysterics over any cases let alone deaths.
And of course now there are people posting on Facebook that they choose to wear a mask. So virtuous and brave. To me it’s counterproductive to make a fuss at a store about it so I wear it where required but I’m very comfortable going without one.
I like that but I’m trying to be a bit more diplomatic. Lol
"You do you."
"My health is not your business."
"I weigh public health against many other competing concerns, just as human societies have done as long as there have been human societies"
If you're feeling less polite: "this illness primarily affects people with lifestyle-related ailments (eg. obesity). Why should I care for them more than they care for themselves? They've now had a year to improve their health to decrease their susceptibility to serious illness."
Don't accept their frame. Their frame is intended to trap you: to either call you callous and heartless or to get you to do what they want. Make your own frame.
Since you are black tell them to stop questioning you or they're racist. And masks are a tool of white supremacy.
Let me try that.
