This week’s readings and podcasts were very eye-opening and interesting, especially since I have absolutely no knowledge of anything video game related. However, the story of Zoe Quinn was probably which stood out to me the most. It was sad to see that sexism even exists in the video game world. Quinn was harassed after she had created a video game that proved to be a success. This was a result of a woman stepping foot in a male dominated industry, which evidently did not end up well. With this incident happening within the last ten years, I would hope that there has been more acceptance within this industry for women. In fact, I wish this were the case in any industry. It is unfair that women gamers, such as Zoe Quinn, are put down for being successful. Given that she was successful in a male dominated industry.

I think Kidd sums up GamerGate perfectly: "GamerGate is essentially a culture war for the soul of the gaming industry." I didn't know what GG was before doing this week's reading, but seeing the reaction my classmates' tweets have gotten on here makes me realize how controversial this scandal is. Misogyny is a big driving factor behind GG and a lot of male gamers feel like there is no place for women in video games, whether it be playing them, creating them, or writing about them. The fact that GG all started from one woman's love for coding and her battle with depression shows that the male gamer world was threatened by a woman like Zoe Quinn. What further illustrates this is how she received emails from people telling her to kill herself because she created Depression Quest. Sadly, she is not the only female gamer/videogame creator to have received death threats and threats of rape.

No, it was a result of a woman having sex with journalists who wrote about her work. And that's ignoring the fact that Zoe Quinn is really not 'in the indsutry' whatsoever. She has never released a commercial game and has never made a penny from game development.
I could honestly write a 3000 word essay debunking the litany of blatant, irrefutably incorrect nonsense in these short statements. It really is staggering how utterly fucking wrong they manage to be on virtually every imaginable detail.
I bet any students who rightfully point out the professor is wrong will get thrown out of the class entirely with the school rejecting refund requests.
