Reddit tier rules against bigotry are not the way to deal with spergs.
Absolutely agreed. I was just playing Devil's advocate, providing the only positive spin I could for R16.
We'll see what the community and mods want to do but, as I said, I'm personally not a fan of R16, and think the rules could be cleaned up and consolidated in general.
"Trump attacked Venezuela, which gives me reason to come back," or something to that effect.
He made it less than two days before going back on his word, no surprise.
If he weren't so insane, and hadn't previously doxxed people and ban-evaded, he'd be welcome here, even if he was obnoxious. But he just can't help himself.
I think it was more an issue of him being inactive for long periods of time, not that he was specifically covering for or targeting anyone (outside of a few exceptions.)
But, yeah, it was obnoxious him moderating month old comments and temp banning regulars for very minor things, after letting actual lunatics run roughshod for that same month.
It just wasn't consistent.
Welcome to the party, pal.
Normally I'd be snarky and post a Palpatine or Sideshow Bob laughing meme but I'll be serious for once.
Palpatine posting definitely crossed my mind too, but it's always creepy when mods even jokingly do that, and I agree it's better to keep things serious.
wanting to do minimal moderation, more having to act against porn/gore spammers and similar obvious trolls.
Sounds perfect.
Pings are working again, too, by the way. Perfect.
Ayy can you put the link to the modlog in the sidebar?
I'll see if I can do that, still getting used to things here.
And, when stickies are working again, I plan to make a sticky with the modlogs link, too. I've always said that should be a thing, to help keep mods accountable.
For now, here's the scored mod log, which has the most functionality, as I recall:
I want to start slow, and not go right into changing things...but that's been on my list for years, literally since the beginning.
We'll see how the community and the rest of the mods feel, but I'm definitely open to it. Won't happen today, as I think moving too fast would be silly, but I'd say it's a possibility.
The only justification for R16 is to keep the people too spergy to do the easy workarounds from shitting up the place, but generally the worst offenders would do something else rulebreaking anyway.
As I've said, my main concerns are the outsiders coming in with negative intent, and I have no interest in going after regulars here for stuff that isn't disruptive. R16 enforcement is...nowhere on my priority list. I really only care about it when it involves calls to violence...and there's already rules against that anyway.
I've always said we don't need sixteen rules. But, again, I want to take things slow.
That's a major site issue, not a moderation one. We can't change that functionality.
Only thing I can suggest, is try the different URLs; I've heard others say it behaves differently depending on how you access the site.
Feel free to experiment, and see what works best. I think there are three different URLs. The oldest dedicated one, and then the Communities and Scored URLs, the latter two I think are pretty similar to each other but might have slight differences.
the long delays in dealing with trolls and spammers.
Main reason I wanted mod status, and wanted more mods in general.
We've all been good at coexisting over the years, and I have no interest, and see no need, in trying to moderate discussions among regulars here. But I want the ability to nuke the obvious bad faith outsiders, when they pop up. It was a massive failure that these people, who were never part of the community here, were allowed to have so much impact, for such long periods of time. There's no excuse for that, and it was just shitting up the board when it happened. My main goal is not letting that happen.
Assuming none of the new mods go power hunger (I think it seems like a good bunch, personally, and don't expect major problems), it will be a change of the better. We'll see what people want to do, but it also lets us open things up a bit, as the previous filters didn't let anyone new in, pretty much.
Frieren starts slow, but in my opinion does live up to the hype. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I personally think it's great...but I can see why the first few episodes might drive some people away. It definitely picks up as it goes. Frieren is peak.
As to Chainsaw Man, I haven't read the manga or anything, but I know some of what's coming just from happening upon chatter online. Part of the whole point is that the MC is being abused; it doesn't seem glorified, he's just constantly beaten down and taken advantage of. And, as the other response said, a big part of the hype is the action/animation.
The new stuff is just coming out, and there's already plenty of fantasy/isekai, multiple comedy/harem, and the like. I do see two alphabet nonsense animes, and two more female focused ones, but overall it still looks fairly standard.
And probably better than the last season or two, which were getting pretty uninteresting, in my opinion.
Sentenced to Be a Hero seems pretty dang promising, check it out if you haven't.
I don't think so. I think it's definitely getting/gotten worse, but I don't think we're in a downward spiral. I think Japan has noticed the danger, and is beginning to push back, so I think we'll actually see a reversal of the trend. It will take a while, and we'll always be in danger of wokalizers, but I don't think anime is doomed or decaying.
I could be wrong, and I agree that's definitely a danger, but I just don't think it's over or crashing, personally.
He didn't persuade me. If anything, I persuaded him. Or, more accurately, things got so bad, he just said fuck it, and modded some people.
As to the reason, it's pretty simply; here needed it much more. We never had the gaps in moderation on Reddit that we had here, as far as I recall. Even when we were being outright brigaded, we never had so much stuff slipping through the cracks. Maybe once or twice, but not on the regular.
Moderation here was a mess; either too much, when Dom was around and catching up on weeks-old minor infractions, or had set up filters that nuke everyone; or not enough, pre-filters, when we had pedophiles, porn, gore, and so much more, getting spam-posted nonstop.
I mainly want the mod powers to pull the trigger on any more obvious ne'er-do-wells that pop up, to keep the board running smoothly. There was no excuse for some of the shit that was getting through. It's better now, but probably too locked down. We'll see how all the new mods want to handle things on that front.
Just so you know, I did go ahead and ban him. He's a sitewide ban evader, and was spamming and admitting to bad faith when he first arrived, and should have already been removed like a month ago. There was certainly cause, so I just did it.
Pings aren't working, so no one was even notified of mod powers. Most of us aren't online, and Bandolier is sensibly starting by taking things slow. We're all getting acclimated here.
Fuck it. I just banned Imp now, though. I was thinking of taking it slow too, but he's so egregious, and being an alt for a sitewide ban evader who has engaged in actually dangerous and likely illegal activity is enough of a reason. He's gone.
EDIT: And within ten minutes the DMs have begun. I'm on "the payroll" apparently. Even though he admitted to rule violations from the very start, and it was clear he'd be banned as soon as we had moderation again.
Just to checking in. I've got a few things to do this morning, but wanted to let everyone know I saw this, and acknowledge it.
As u/BandageBandolier said, please let us know what your feelings are on moderation (aside from mods being fags, that's a given, and has already been pointed out.)
I can't speak for anyone else (we're not that organized yet!), but I for one am not here to take over, or change things. I just want to keep things running smoothly, and take out bad actors when they pop up. Not here to police regulars, or their speech, outside of when they occasionally go full schitzo.
Hope everyone is having a good day, and I might do a more detailed introduction later.
I'm fine with whatever.
Also, just like with Dom, the pings don't seem to be working. Which is weird, they were earlier today for sure.
Maybe set up a private community to start, then we can branch out later if we need?
Mod logs are in the side bar. Can be prettied up later, but the links are there.
