See, the far west was founded by those seeking freedom and they own land and they hit gold and oil. Became rich overnight.

Now you have an influx of thrillseekers who want easy money for little work. They show up and oh look it's not so easy. Now you have all these broke bastards lobbying to be supported by the "local government" because making an honest wage is difficult with so many people.

Now over time it becomes progressively more and more socialist. For the longest time this was held off by the barons of industries who didn't want anything to do with that nonsense and controlled the politics to prevent it. With the advent of the internet and an easier life however all those leeches were more freely able to congregate and force their socially discohesive activities.

It's why Cali was Republican with a socialist undercurrent all the way up to the 90s, then almost overnight the Republicans were purged and the socialists took full control. Those commies were always there and were always corrupting the system slowly, however with the advent of the internet and the ability to quickly control the flow of information you saw a sudden shift in their actions from background subversion to full assault.
